If you plan to plant near the sidewalk or driveway, consider how de-icing measures could contaminate the soil. If you want to plant near woodlands, be prepared to deal with furry and feathered visitors that may step on or nibble your newly planted flowers.

Light and Climate

Light quality is a crucial factor in successful landscaping. Some plants only thrive in full sun, with at least six hours of sunlight each day. Others do well in the partial sun, shade and deep shade that is more common in urban areas.

Climate should be your final consideration. Choose plants that thrive in a temperate climate. Others need more rain or sun than our climate can provide, making them less likely to survive.
